Before read this post, watch the video below.
I was really surprised after seen this video. The enviroment of TV shows in U.S is so huge… how could 24 be so influent?
How far is Jack Bauer going through American imagination? As they said, Bauer is always fair, he always saves the day, he always protect them – the American people – before his own life. It’s ‘the right’ to condemn torture methods, but does the hero making it acceptable?
This question was also discussed by Bill Clinton on an interview, who, basically, said that never happened during his administration.
So, even Jack Bauer being punished over the seasons, the way that editors put it makes it almost impossible to be against him. It’s like you ask anybody if he could kill another person. Of couse he will say that he couldn’t. Then, try to put in danger his child, family or nation. Bingo, you have a potential soldier. That’s 24’s core. By penalizing Jack Bauer, the same ‘right’, as government, becomes one of his enemies in the show. And, as we know, he’s always right in his actions.
With 24’s popularity over U.S, sounds curious all discussions around the cases of torture in Iraq. Like me, I guess, most of Americans only condemns the abuses, but remains “blind” face torture “with proposes”, to get confessions, as example. In public discussions, probably they will deny it, but inside is not their true opinion.
This contradictorie point of view is very funny when watching/reading American press. What they really think?
In case of Iraq, the war is unfair, different of 24’s conflicts. There is no real risk for nation, no emergencies. So, every kind of torture in Iraq is abusive. Jack’s actions are justified by dramatic crisis, panic, pressure… this scenary gives him all power, above what is right and what isn’t.
About the main question: its influence on soldiers. First of all, they must to be different of you and me. I mean psychological preparation, to understand how important is their role in a war and how ficional is 24’s reality. Also, probably the war has not propose for them.
If Bin Laden was placed under torture before 9/11? Who would bring the Human Rights Letter for his interrogator?

To pra ver um povo mais alienado que o Norte Americano. Todos com, Obama pra cá, Obama pra lá, primeiro presidente negro, e bla bla bla…
